The Lower Depths

THE TASK
Design of a program book for play ”The Lower Depths" by Maxim Gorky, adapted by Jörg Bochow and Volker Lösch for the State Theatre Stuttgart.

THE CHALLENGE
In addition to the action on stage, comprehensive interviews with citizens of Stuttgart are to be documented - in an appealing and conceptually consistent [harmonious, coherent] form.

THE SOLUTION
Strichpunkt has designed over 100 program books for the State Theatre Stuttgart - all in DIN A6 format that fits perfectly into pockets. For "The Lower Depths" an entire book was designed, which documents interviews with citizens of Stuttgart on job-related, social and private affairs on 116 pages in an oversize DIN A4 format: A compendium of events in the city from the perspective of a taxi driver, a thief, a female student, an entrepreneur, a short-time worker and other characters who translate the play based in the Russia of 1900 to the present day Stuttgart. Strichpunkt not only created each text page in individual form of a briefcase, but also developed a collage, image rich and concise illustration and individual title typography for each interview. The book has won several awards at national and international design competitions.
